Good day, everyone! This is K.O. Lynn and we’re going to talk about another one of Ubisoft’s foibles. I know you’re excited. My sincere condolences to all those who have been affected by Ubisoft’s recent layoffs. I know how unfair that all feels and Ubisoft has had a rather awful track record as a business for some time. Good luck out there!
Anyway, on to the real subject of today’s podcast: the Assassin’s Creed movie. It was no surprise to me when this movie was announced. Every major franchise – whether it’s a book, a graphic novel, a video game, or even a TV show – needs some kind of movie tie-in. It’s an easy to way to cash-in and perhaps introduce new people to the franchise. Hey, it worked out for The Witcher, until the TV show fumbled the ball. It’s worked out for The Last of Us and, heck, even Sonic the Hedgehog has seen a revitalization once they fixed his original horrid design.\
Video game adaptations can work. So what is it about the ones that fail? Some of those reasons may be unique to the franchise, but some of it definitely comes down to story. Let’s explore that, shall we?
